Montreal CAN-AM Hockey Tourney 14-16 Feb 2014
Well we have returned home safe and sound, victorious from an awesome experience at the CAN-AM Hockey Tournament in Montreal.  The kids having won the Gold medal in the Novice division.  Yes! Novice division!  We played teams with at least some kids on each team having been born in 2005.  Our kids played their hearts out and performed very well often facing much larger opponents.  We also came home with a win in the relay race in the skills competition and the essay scholarship prize for a CAN-AM hockey camp.

All four of our games were close and hard fought with the scores being: 3-2 win, 2-1 win, 7-5 loss, 4-3 OT win.
Of course our one loss was avenged to a degree and followed up by the overtime Gold Medal win against the same very good Kings team that had beaten us the previous day.  This one could have very easily gone either way.

Speaking of this Kings team - who hail from a small town just outside of Ottawa called Carlton Place.
Many of us parents (this one included) made mention and were impressed to no end with the sportsmanship, respect, and class shown by the players, coaches, and parents of this group.  The following are just some of the examples:
Patting our player on the head when they knocked our player down and into the net.
Waiting patiently to applaud and shake our kids hands after having beaten us in our first meeting.
Again waiting patiently to shake our hands and applaud us when they were beaten by us in the Gold Medal game.
Forming a gauntlet for our players to pass through when we finally came off the ice after the win, celebration, and medal presentation.
The parents and coaches approaching us in the halls, stands, and restaurant area before and after the final, shaking our hands and complementing our team, staff, and fellow parents.
Our kids and their kids playing mini sticks together in the hotel common room, playing to a 3-3 tie and wanting to have an overtime to settle it but being told it was bed time and they could settle it the next day in the final. How telling was that!
How well we all got along at the hotel both parents and kids.

It brought home to the writer the meaning of all of this, which in my humble opinion is character building, sportsmanship, life skills, and friendship. To quote one of our parents (Rob S.) it's what these tournaments should be all about.

On a final but most important note:

On behalf of all of us I would like to compliment and thank our Treasurer Tammy Racine on a simply fantastic job in taking a lot of time and effort to put this all together for us.  Tammy you did a marvellous job and pulled it off without so much as a hitch. Kudos and props to you girl!!!
