We have noticed a few players with laces wrapped around their ankles. Here are a few pointers regarding why we should not be tying the laces around the ankles.
- Restricts proper movement. It is impossible to do a proper knee bend when the ankles have limited front to back flex or movement.
- There is an increased risk of injury because all of the leg muscles need to work together when absorbing impact. With the laces tied around the ankle muscles are restricted.
- Potential to restrict blood circulation. Although rare, it is feasible that laces wrapped too tight could have a negative impact on blood flow to the feet.
To help transition players away from wrapping their laces they can focus on strengthening their ankles. The video below will show a few exercises.
